Logan Harrison competes at 2026 Global Skills Challenge

LOGAN Harrison, a 22-year-old student and floor and wall tiler, is competing against some of the best vocational talent in the world at the 2026 Global Skills Challenge in Wollongong from June 24-28.

Hosted by Illawarra TAFE, the competition pits participants from 15 countries against one another.

The emerging elite tradespeople test their skills in industry-based challenges, designed to mirror real world situations, while adhering to global standards.

The event is seen as a training ground for the Australian Skillaroos – the nation’s representative squad of 38 apprentices, trainees, and students – and a curtain-raiser for the 48th WorldSkills International Competition, which will be held in Shanghai, China in September.

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan, said the competition puts a spotlight on the quality of students developing their skills at TAFE NSW.

“This competition gives students from TAFE NSW and across Australia the chance to test themselves at an elite level,” Mr Whan said.

“It showcases the emerging talent of our vocational education and training sector.

“Each of them has already demonstrated exceptional skill, resilience and determination to reach this stage.

“It’s inspiring to see so many talented students stepping up to showcase their trades with pride.

“Good luck to Logan, and the eight other TAFE NSW students representing Australia.

“I congratulate them on a fantastic achievement earned through unwavering dedication and the strong support of their teachers.”

Logan, who studies at TAFE Newcastle, is excited about the WorldSkills International Competition in Shanghai later this year.

“I’m nervous but really excited to be able to benchmark myself against some of the world’s best in my trade,” Logan said. “It’s great experience and exposure for me, and good advertising for my employer Hodgo’s Tiling Solutions, which has been so supportive of me.”

The Global Skills Challenge will feature 33 disciplines, including carpentry, plumbing, cooking, healthcare, cyber security, graphic design technology, mechatronics, and automotive refinishing.
