Mother’s Day Classic returns in support of cancer research

THE Mother’s Day Classic (MDC) returns to Port Macquarie for the twelfth time on Sunday, 10 May.

From humble beginnings in 1998 with 3,000 participants in Melbourne and Sydney raising $50,000, the Mother’s Day Classic has become a major fixture on the national fundraising calendar.

Up to 100,000 participants expected to walk and run five-kilometre courses at more than 90 locations nationwide this year in support of breast and ovarian cancer research.

In Port Macquarie, local event hosts and volunteers are busy behind the scenes in preparation for Sunday’s event.

“It’s always a busy time, yet it is so rewarding to be able to create this event each year, with our amazing Port Macquarie riverfront and foreshore as the backdrop to something that is extremely meaningful for so many,” said local event host Carmen Abi-Saab.

“There are many people in our very own community who are walking their own breast or ovarian cancer journey every day.

“When someone is diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer, the impact also extends to partners, children, family members and friends.

“The MDC brings people together to recognise, acknowledge and support everyone’s unique story.”

Port Macquarie’s MDC is volunteer-led and funded by local business sponsors and in-kind contributors.
