CYCLING for Dementia fund-raiser Brett Boots is expected to return home on Friday, 11 September, having completed his 650km solo Ride to Remember from Brisbane to Port Macquarie.
Mr Boots undertook the deeply personal four-day journey for his mum to raise $10,000 for Dementia Australia.
He shared his personal reflections on his GoFundMe page, which he established to cover the essential costs of his ride, including transport, accommodation, fuel, food and safety equipment.
“Dementia has changed my life forever,” he wrote.
“I’ve seen friends and clients walk this journey, but nothing prepares you for watching your own mum slowly lose pieces of herself.
“We tell her stories, knowing she will forget them seconds later, but those moments stay with you forever.
“The moments she looks at me and doesn’t quite know who I am… those moments stay with you.
“That’s why I’m taking on Ride to Remember.”
Mr Boots is expected to complete his ride on Friday, 11 September at 11am outside the Dementia Australia office on Bridge Street, Port Macquarie.
Member for Port Macquarie, Robert Dwyer MP, will be one of the friendly faces waiting to greet and congratulate him.
“Riding 650 kilometres on your own over four days takes real grit,” Mr Dwyer said.
“Doing it for your mum and for every family touched by dementia takes real heart.
“I’d love to see our community turn out to welcome Brett home and get behind his ride.”
Mr Boots timed his ride in the lead-up to Dementia Action Week, which runs from 21 to 27 September.
The Dementia Action Week theme for 2026 is “It’s time to talk about dementia”.
