Jess Beresford celebrates 15 years with Riding for the Disabled

JESS Beresford has been a familiar face at the Riding for the Disabled Association (NSW) Wauchope Port Macquarie Centre (RDA) for more than 15 years.

The long-running program has played a significant role in her development.

Jess’ involvement was first encouraged by staff at Westport School who recognised the benefits it could offer her.

RDA President Kerri Argent told News Of The Area, “Westport School [was] the first to identify the benefits of the RDA program for Jess and she has continued to ride weekly.”

Over the years, Jess has developed her riding ability and now enjoys a greater level of independence during sessions.

“Jess has progressed to many off-lead rides and she loves her weekly ride on either Jinx or Noble, her two favourite horses,” Ms Argent said.

Each week, Jess attends sessions at the Wauchope Showground accompanied by her carer Roxanne Mann, who supports her participation and enjoyment of the program.

The centre provides a supportive and welcoming environment for riders of all abilities, with trained volunteers and well-loved horses helping participants build confidence and physical skills.

Jess is often seen greeting fellow riders, volunteers and horses, including Bluey, another popular four legged member of the RDA team.

Her story highlights the lasting impact of the RDA program, not only in developing riding skills but also in fostering independence, routine and a strong sense of belonging.

Programs like RDA continue to offer meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities to engage, grow and thrive through the unique bond between rider and horse.
