Letter to the Editor: NDIS cuts don’t add up

DEAR News Of The Area,

TIGHTENING the NDIS while leaving gas profits untouched doesn’t add up.

On the Mid North Coast, the NDIS underpins thousands of lives, and a growing local workforce. Around 9300 people here rely on it, with over half less than 18 years old.

The supports help people get to work, stay in school, and be part of the community.

Most people agree the scheme should be well run.

There are real concerns about consistency and value for money, and they shouldn’t be ignored. But something doesn’t sit right in the current national debate.

We are being told the NDIS needs tightening, yet at the same time, Australia continues to miss out on billions in revenue from gas exports.

Analysis from the Australia Institute has shown that stronger taxation of gas companies could raise billions each year, more than enough to take pressure off public services like the NDIS. Some of the loudest voices calling for NDIS restraint, including One Nation and the Nationals, have also been among the strongest defenders of the fossil fuel industry.

In a region like ours, that is a choice about priorities and where we can look for savings and revenue.

The NDIS supports thousands of people and underpins a growing local workforce.

No single change will solve the NDIS, but where we choose to raise revenue matters.

Regards,
Jake LITTLE,
Port Macquarie.
