A RECORD 14,000 books found new homes at the annual Rotary Club of Port Macquarie book sale.
Now in its 26th year, the sale drew crowds of locals and visitors between 10-12 April.
Book sale convenor Bob Cleland told News Of The Area, “the sale was a huge success.”
“It was great to see so many people still reading, and it was especially heartening to have so many families bringing their children in to pick up some school holiday reading.”
“Crime novels are usually the most popular, followed by teen fantasy and sci fi.
“This year we were completely cleaned out of children’s books.
“I saw lots of kids sitting reading their books while their parents browsed, the whole event just had a lovely feel to it.”
The three-day sale was staffed by volunteers, with the 3 Wing Australian Air Force Cadets 317 Squadron also giving their time to assist.
The club will use the money raised from the sale to support local organisations such as Endeavour House, Sailability, Rotary youth programs, and Liberty Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services.
Further afield, funds will assist Port Macquarie gynaecologist Dr Ray Hodgson in his medical work with women and children in rural Nepal.
Many of the leftover books were given to the Rotary Clubs of Laurieton, South West Rocks, and Wauchope for their upcoming book sales.
Donations of good quality books are accepted at the Rotary book store at 198 Hastings River Drive on Saturdays from 9am-12.30pm.
