WAUCHOPE High School’s Year 12 Certificate 2 Cookery students are gearing up to run the Rural Students Café at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
They have been fine-tuning their skills in recent weeks at school, including food and beverage preparation, service techniques and working as a team in a fast-paced environment.
At the café, students will immerse themselves in both kitchen and front-of-house roles, preparing and serving tasting plates inspired by local ingredients.
“It is exciting; being at the Royal Easter Show, going to the city, meeting students and teachers from other schools,” said teacher Simeon James.
“In the classroom students get to work with such small quantities, so to get an opportunity to work with so much produce is more of a real world experience for them.”
Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan said the Wauchope students would bring a “real taste of the Mid North Coast region” to the iconic agricultural show.
“It’s fantastic to see them representing their region with such skill and enthusiasm,” he said.
“The Rural Café gives these young people a valuable opportunity to step outside the classroom and gain hands-on experience in a real hospitality setting, working alongside professional chefs.
“I’d encourage anyone heading to the Show to drop in, enjoy some great local flavours and support these hardworking students.
“You’ll be experiencing true Wauchope hospitality.”
