A GROUP of dedicated TAFE students recently joined WIRES Mid North Coast (MNC) volunteers for a hands-on working bee at the new Wildlife Rehabilitation Shelter in Coffs Harbour.
The working bee brought together the next generation of wildlife carers with experienced WIRES members, who have been working tirelessly to establish and maintain the facility with limited volunteer resources.
The students, who come from right across the Mid North Coast including Coffs Harbour, Nambucca Heads and Port Macquarie, rolled up their sleeves making possum dreys, moving mulch and fitting out enclosures, delivering real improvements for animals in care in just one day.
WIRES MNC volunteers were highly impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, willingness to learn and eagerness to contribute.
“This day was incredibly uplifting to be part of,” a WIRES MNC representative said.
“Seeing these young people so engaged and motivated to help wildlife was inspiring, and their support has made a real difference to the shelter.”
This Wildlife Rehabilitation Shelter plays an important role in supporting local carers by providing a safe space for animals to recover and prepare for release.
For many of the students, the experience offered valuable insight into wildlife rehabilitation and the important work carried out by volunteers.
“This was a wonderful experience to help wildlife that is currently in rehabilitation while doing work that helps us achieve competencies in our studies,” one TAFE student told News Of The Area.
“It feels great to help and I am looking forward to more opportunities.”
The students also showed strong interest in continuing their involvement beyond their studies, with opportunities available to support the shelter through volunteer induction training.
WIRES MNC hopes the day will encourage more community members to get involved, whether through volunteering, training or supporting local wildlife initiatives.
