VOLUNTEERING opportunities available with Australian Red Cross Emergency Services were highlighted with a presence at both Port Macquarie’s Foreshore Markets and the Mid North Coast Outdoor Show in Wauchope on Saturday 10 August.
Targeted recruitment is currently under way for a new casual recovery volunteer role across the Mid North Coast and North Coast regions of NSW.
“As the volunteering landscape continues to evolve, we have introduced this role to better meet the needs of community members who want to support disaster recovery efforts but may not be able to commit to regular volunteering,” said Felicity Lochhead, Project Lead – NSW Recovery Services Capacity Grant.
“The casual recovery volunteer role is ideal for people who want to be prepared to help their local community when disaster strikes, without the requirement of ongoing regular volunteering.”
Local volunteers, Lyndall Nairn and Jane Jones, were both part of the flood recovery in Wauchope in 2025.
Their experience highlights the need for volunteers when disaster strikes and the true value of local volunteers who understand the services and the community in need.
Volunteers have often had an experience that makes them want to join the Red Cross or, like Jane, have finished work and still want to contribute in some way.
“It is wonderful to be able to provide a safe space for people in distress,” Jane said.
“They come through the doors and are relieved to see Red Cross volunteers.”
Jane joined the Red Cross in 2022 and Lyndall has been involved for 10 years.
When Lyndall retired she found she had time to volunteer in the community.
“When people are really in need we have to help,” said Lyndall.
Volunteers simply complete their initial training, undertake an annual refresher, and may be called upon to assist when an emergency occurs.
Volunteers complete approximately 8.5 hours of training to build the skills and confidence needed to support local disaster recovery activities as part of Australian Red Cross.
Should they be activated following an emergency, they will be supported by both Red Cross staff and experienced volunteers throughout their involvement.
The registration process is straightforward and includes registering interest online, participating in a short interview and completing a one-day training program.
Training is available through both in-person in Port Macquarie on Friday 18 September at the library or via online delivery options.
