CONSTRUCTION of a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Hastings River Drive is set to be complete by late June.
The upgrade will see the existing zebra crossing near Aston Street removed and replaced with pedestrian-activated traffic lights.
Upgraded street lighting, improvements to sections of roadway near the signals, and updated line marking and signage will also be installed.
Council has appointed Alliance Construction Group to deliver the works, with construction expected to begin on Monday, 30 March and be completed by late June, weather and site conditions permitting.
General Manager Robert Fish said the lights will significantly improve safety for people crossing that section of Hastings River Drive.
“This is an important location of Hastings River Drive, relied upon by a considerable number of users given its proximity to nearby residential and retirement homes, commercial outlets, schools and numerous sporting fields.
“Upgrading the existing crossing to signalised lights will provide a safer and more accessible way for people to cross the road, while also improving traffic management along this busy corridor.”
During construction, motorists and pedestrians may notice temporary traffic changes in the area.
Work will include temporary lane closures, work zone speed limits and short pedestrian detours near the site, while access to nearby homes, businesses and facilities will be maintained throughout construction.
The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program and Port Macquarie Hastings Council.
The project follows a resolution of Port Macquarie Hastings Councillors in 2023 to progress with the signalisation of the Hastings River Drive pedestrian crossing.
Councillors supported the upgrade after investigations identified the location as a priority for improved pedestrian safety.
Motorists are advised to please adhere to changed traffic conditions, observe all temporary signage and speed limits, and allow additional travel time while construction is underway.
