
LYNNY Murphy has been living in the Camden Haven for 30 years. She plays bocce, indoor bowls and cards, and surrounds herself with positive people at every opportunity.
Eating well, gardening, socialising and laughing as much as possible are important facets of her everyday life, and she is adamant that she is much more than her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease.
She proudly lives by the words of poet Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Ms Murphy is active with the Dementia Friendly Community Alliance, which educates businesses, works to reduce stigma, and supports those living with dementia.
“I do not do everything well, but the people around me understand how important it is for me to feel included, accepted and supported for as long as possible,” Ms Murphy said.
“Their patience, kindness and steady love are my hope and my strength.
“I’m so grateful to the Alliance who welcomed me, included me and, in doing that, strengthened and encouraged my passion to give back to the community and to still believe I have purpose and something to give.”
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that 446,000 Australians are living with dementia, with this projected to increase to more than 1.1 million by 2054.
Dementia Friendly Port Macquarie is holding a Living Well with Dementia Seminar on 29 July at Laurieton United Services Club.
