Care for a carer: making carers visible during National Carers Week in Port Macquarie

NATIONAL Carers Week is a time to recognise, celebrate and raise awareness of the more than three million Australians who provide unpaid care to a family member or friend.

Carers Week 2026 runs from 11 – 17 October with the theme Care for a Carer: Making Carers Visible.

Carers in the Port Macquarie Hastings area were invited to two community film events at Port Macquarie Hastings Library on Monday, 12 and Wednesday, 14 October, and a morning tea at The Glasshouse on Tuesday, 13 October.

Two short films, ‘Groundhog Night’ and ‘Stairs’, from Bus Stop Films, were shown at the library.

Library staff member Kylie Lancaster led a warm and engaging discussion as participants shared their own experiences as carers and reflected on the messages raised in the films.

“Every person with a disability needs a fierce advocate – a warrior,” said one of the participants.

An interesting discussion concluded Monday’s session about disability access in Port Macquarie, something able-bodied readers might ponder as they navigate their way around town.

The Glasshouse invited local carers to celebrate National Carers Week with a relaxed morning of connection, conversation, a cuppa and cake with fellow carers.

Staff from Carers NSW and Mission Australia were there to share information and support.

Mission Australia supports families, friends and carers of people living with mental health challenges. It provides information, education, practical support and connection to local services from Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads.

Carer Gateway is the national service for carers, funded by the Australian Government, providing practical information and services to assist and support carers in their day-to-day roles.

Guests were able to learn about the NSW Companion Card, accepted at The Glasshouse, which allows people with a disability to attend events with a companion or support person at no additional cost.

They were also able to explore The Glasshouse’s accessible features and other disability supports.

Sam Johnson, Senior Community Development Officer with Port Macquarie Hastings Council, is keen to hear from residents about what they would like to see included in future NSW government-funded events.

Many of us will spend some time in our lives as carers for a family member or a friend who has a disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue, or who is frail aged.

Anyone can become a carer, at any time. More information can be found at:  https://carersweek.com.au/  missionaustralia.com.au or 0429507575 or carergateway.gov.au or 1800422737.
