YEAR 12 students across NSW began their Higher School Certificate written examinations this week.
Hastings Secondary College students from Port Macquarie campus are sitting their exams at the Salvation Army Hall in Lord Street.
After the first English paper, student leaders Lachlan Browne (vice captain) and Cameron Carson (Towns house captain) were quietly confident about their preparation for the exam.
Students were generally happy with the essay question for the common module – Texts and Human Experience.
The question focussed on human strength and vulnerability in Favel Parrett’s novel “Past the Shallows”.
“It was good to put a bit of study in and work hard,” said Browne.
”It was a lot of work, but hopefully it paid off,” Carson added.
They are both relieved to have made a start and to ‘get back into the groove again’.
Carson has three exams this week – two English papers and Modern History, while Browne has five exams, including Hospitality.
The boys talked about future study and career aspirations. Both are planning to take a gap year to travel.
Browne then hopes to study Occupational Therapy on the Gold Coast while Carson plans to study Diagnostic Radiography at the University of Sydney.
Port Macquarie campus Year 12 Advisor Rory Willaton has been with the group since Year 7 and was there to support his students as they finished the English paper.
”I’m pretty excited for them – the first stage of their last couple of weeks,” he said.
“There are 73 students in Year 12 at Port Macquarie campus this year.
“To see them get to this stage is pretty special.”
Hastings College Principal, Meaghan Cook hopes the students’ dedication is rewarded.
“The staff tell me they have never had so many students come in for workshops – some every day of the holidays.”
