THIS year’s Bird Rock Classic, held at Rainbow Beach Bonny Hills, has been described as “high quality” with 90 competitors hitting the surf and the duo of Kyle and Avalon Enfield taking out both the men’s and women’s events.
Damian Kelly, president of Camden Haven Junior Boardriders, said the event was a tribute to surfers and a powerful example of community spirit.
Sean Cummins and Ian Bell ran the judging and contest direction with Samba Mann controlling the water safety.
Saturday saw great competition in the heats and semifinals.
Sunday’s finals were held in offshore conditions with a moderate swell, leading to a very high level of surfing.
Kayle Enfield was named the Men’s Open Bird Rock Champion while Avalon Enfield won the Women’s Open event.
Other winners were:
– Rory Jack Castle, Men’s Longboard, (Wayne Gately Perpetual)
– Cath Perry, Women’s Longboard
– Max Lewis Bartlett, Men’s Open B
– Zeke Wollam, Junior Boys Under 18 (Scott Wylie Award Surfboard)
– Beau Hall, Cadets Boys Under 14
– Rory Jack Castle, Grand Masters
– Daniel John Blanch, Legends Open Knee Board (Michael Dobson Perpetual)
– Seaweed Smith and Brendon Robson, Prone
– Mayla March, Women’s Encouragement Award.
Apart from the competition, there was a paddle out at Rainbow Beach and a memorial gathering at the Town Beach monument in Port Macquarie on Friday.
The memorial was erected in 1998 overlooking Port’s greatest surfing landmark “Bird Rock”. It commemorates surfers who have been lost.
The Bird Rock Memorial Classic is the longest running surfing event in Port Macquarie.
