MORE than 100 people brought their cats and dogs along to the Healthy Pet Day in Port Macquarie on 23 April.
Hosted by the Port Macquarie RSPCA Supporter Group and held at the St Agnes Community Centre, Healthy Pet Day is for owners facing financial challenges.
Their pets receive free vaccinations, vet health checks, engraved pet tags, pet food, and microchipping.
Name tags and microchipping help to ensure a pet is returned home without their owner incurring costs for impounding.
Also involved in the initiative were the North Eastern Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NEAMI), Greencross Vets, East Port Veterinary Hospital, and Port Macquarie Hastings Council.
RSPCA Branch Manager Brandon Cowan was delighted with the turnout.
“Increasing costs are affecting many, with rough sleepers and those who are unhoused particularly affected,” he said.
“Not everyone is able to access vet care for their animals, and we want to preserve the human-animal bond.”
Parasite treatments and pet food proved very popular, with information also on hand for attendees who needed links to further resources such as housing and mental health support.
“This day would not have been possible without the generosity of our volunteers who gave up their time to be here,” Mr Cowan added.
