Wauchope Show pavilion filled with record number of cakes, slices and biscuits

THE Wauchope Showground pavilion was bursting with treats during the 114th annual show on 10-11 April.

The popularity of country cooking competitions was evident in the queues of locals dropping off their entries on Thursday morning.

The cooking competition featured many old-fashioned favourites including Anzac biscuits, jam drops, rock cakes, mushroom tarts, sponges, butter, orange and marble cakes.

Cookery Stewards, Lorraine Wedge and Lexie Burton, were pleased with the record number of entries in the open section, including from a number of men.

“It was rewarding to see some of the new competitors come away with winning entries,” said Lexie.

“The school holidays [also] gave the juniors a great opportunity to test their skills.

“Many commented that they had lots of fun, while the mums mentioned the messy kitchens they had to head home to.”

Entry numbers were high, particularly in the junior cookery section, where Evelyn Park was the most successful exhibitor.

The judge said the quality of the junior entries was sometimes better than in the same open class.

There were 44 classes in the open section, with the judge’s favourite the cooked slice, won by Vicki Martin.

Sheryl Workman, a stalwart of the Wauchope Show, entered 37 classes in the cookery competition and was named the most successful exhibitor.

She also entered in the handicraft and arranged flowers’ sections.

Sheryl is a member of the Women’s Show Auxiliary, as well as a steward for the jams, marmalades, jellies, relishes and preserves.
