TOWN Beach Reserve Master Plan has undergone a consultation, with Port Macquarie Hastings Council’s Engagement Team meeting residents to gather feedback on the current plan.
The consultation in December included members of the Enable Reference Group, local disability and accessibility advocates who welcomed the chance to provide information on their lived experience.
Port Macquarie mum Donna Liver knows first hand about accessibility challenges as her teenage son navigates life as a full-time wheelchair user.
Donna told News Of The Area, “I’m thrilled to be here today and to have had our voices and ideas heard and considered for implementation.
“Council’s deep listening to those with lived experience on our beautiful beach and foreshore reserve not only benefits members of our inclusive group, but it also benefits the entire community.”
Items raised with council’s team included potential updating of the Liberty Swing, a need for tactile ground surface indicators, a desire for wheelchair users to be able to easily and safely access all areas including the playground.
Additional items raised were bike tracks, a basketball court, and the lack of handrails and dedicated wheelchair areas in the amphitheatre.
Council’s Master Plan focuses on improved accessibility, including widening the foreshore pedestrian path at Town Beach.
Upgrades to car parks, lighting and beach access are also proposed.
The plan includes improved links to surrounding roads and escarpments.
Sea wall replacement is also listed as a priority.
