MO-VEMBER Barcapella Sing Project is a month-long community music initiative in Port Macquarie supporting the wellbeing focus of Movember.

The project aims to engage men through the social, mental and emotional benefits of singing together.

Throughout November, patrons of various bars and cafe venues across the town might find themselves at a surprise pop-up ‘Barcapella’ sing-along event.

Leanne Johnson, the local choir director for Blokes Notes, initiated the project.

“These very brief interactive flash-sing experiences invite everyone present to participate, while featuring uplifting rock anthem repertoire that particularly resonates with men,” she said.

“These relaxed, welcoming sessions provide an opportunity for men to connect, build friendships, reduce social isolation, and experience the positive impact of group singing in a supportive environment.

“By taking music directly into everyday social spaces and creating accessible opportunities for men to participate, the Mo-vember Barcapella Sing Project aims to encourage conversation, strengthen community connection, and inspire participants to discover the lasting mental health benefits of singing together.”

The project is supported by a seed grant from Arts Mid Coast.

The project will offer a free, one-hour men’s singing session every Thursday during November.

Dates for the free one-hour workshops are November 5, 12, 19, 26 at Mac Adams Centre on Lord Street, Port Macquarie between 5:15pm and 6:15pm.
