Cavalier King Charles Spaniels turn out in force for monthly meet and greet in Port Macquarie

DOZENS of wagging tails filled The Terrace on Sunday 11 January as around 20 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and their owners gathered for a relaxed meet-up.

The Cavaliers’ social was part of a broader Sunday “Meet & Greet” program that sees different dog breeds take over the venue each week.

The Terrace Wave Bowl Venue Manager Sue Wadwell said the idea grew from a community desire to create an inclusive and welcoming space for dog lovers.

“The owners [of the venue] have had two oodles, now they just have the one, and wanted to be inclusive and make all the people feel welcome,” she said.

Sue said the Cavaliers’ group regularly draws strong numbers.

“There’s times when we have between 25 and 30 cavaliers,” she said.

“This one [cavaliers] is probably the biggest turnout that we have of all the dog [breeds].”

Alongside coffee for owners, dogs were treated to what Sue described as “little pup cup treat for the pups.”

She said the gatherings were just as important for the dogs as they were for the people.

“It’s good to socialise the dogs too.

“They know their own breed, so it’s really good,” she said.

Regular participant Bec Sierota said she and husband David rarely miss the Cavalier catch-ups.

“I love seeing the dogs meeting other dogs and playing with other dogs, and I love sitting here having a coffee while they’re gated and safe,” she said.

First-time attendee Caroline Endacott said she was drawn by the chance to see the breed together in one place.

“Cavaliers are really great dogs,” she said.

“I just wanted to see the cavaliers altogether.”

The Sunday program runs from 10am to midday each week, with Sighthounds on the first Sunday, Cavaliers on the second, Oodles on the second last Sunday and Golden Retrievers and Labradors closing out the month.
