HERITAGE Christian School students built weekly connections with local seniors during the final school term of the year, through the Stronger Together intergenerational program.
The program brought young people and residents together across RSL LifeCare’s Le Hamel and Pozieres villages.
Eleven students stepped beyond the classroom to meet with residents each week.
They shared conversations and activities designed to strengthen community ties.
The program received support from Healthy North Coast and was facilitated by InterGen Connect.
It focused on reducing isolation, challenging age-based stereotypes and encouraging genuine friendships across generations.
“These moments remind us how meaningful intergenerational connection can be,” Senior School Teacher and program facilitator Casey Baldwin said.
“We’ve seen students grow in confidence, compassion and a deeper appreciation for the wisdom of older generations.”
Students and residents participated in storytelling sessions, mini-Olympics activities and relaxed afternoon tea conversations.
These sessions gave everyone regular opportunities to connect, reflect and learn from one another.
Residents welcomed the opportunity to engage with younger people, sharing personal stories, memories and life experiences throughout the term.
As the program came to a close, both students and residents reflected on the relationships formed and the sense of connection created through meeting consistently.
In the lead-up to the festive season, participants extended their involvement by working together on a community project that supported others beyond the local area.
Students and residents prepared Christmas care boxes for Australian servicemen and servicewomen serving overseas.
They filled the boxes with donated treats, handwritten cards and messages of gratitude from the wider community.
Stronger Together concluded after a term shaped by shared experiences, meaningful interaction and strengthened connections across generations.
