IT’S been a long road to fixing the traffic bottleneck at Wrights Road, but motorists are now a step closer to relief.
Transport for NSW has released detailed plans for the biggest road upgrade ever proposed for the Oxley Highway corridor into Port Macquarie.
The project will be delivered in stages, with upgrades planned between the Wrights Road and Lake Road roundabouts to improve traffic flow, increase safety and support the region’s continued growth.
One of the biggest changes will see eastbound traffic increase from two lanes to six approaching the Lake Road intersection.
Member for Port Macquarie Robert Dwyer said the release of the plans was a major milestone after years of community calls for action.
“This is exactly what our community has been asking for and now we are delivering,” Mr Dwyer said.
“We have listened to local residents, advocated for this project and worked to make sure Port Macquarie gets the infrastructure it needs to keep growing.”
Mr Dwyer said the additional lanes and major improvements between the Wrights Road and Lake Road roundabouts would make a real difference for motorists.
He said the upgrade would also improve access to Port Macquarie Base Hospital and the Education Precinct.
“This is not just about easing congestion today, it’s about building the infrastructure we need for tomorrow,” he said.
“The upgrade will improve safety, reduce congestion, support future growth and provide greater travel choices.”
The first stage will focus on the Pacific Highway and Oxley Highway interchange towards Wauchope, one of the region’s busiest traffic bottlenecks, carrying about 30,000 vehicles each day.
Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said delivering the project in stages would allow the highest priority improvements to begin sooner.
“I’m pleased we can now roll out this staged approach, so locals reap the benefits sooner and know what’s ahead,” Ms Aitchison said.
Backed by a $20 million NSW Government investment, Stage 1A will add extra lanes between the interchange and Billabong Drive, extend the northbound off-ramp, install new traffic signals and improve street lighting.
Detailed design is underway and community feedback is helping shape the final plans.
Early works, including utility relocations, are expected to begin in 2027 before construction starts.
Planning is also continuing for future upgrades to Wrights Road, Lake Road and local road connections to Port Macquarie Base Hospital and the Health and Education Precinct.
Longer-term improvements at the John Oxley Drive, Carlie Jane Drive and Widderson Street intersections are also on the cards.
