Dave Reneke to speak at Probus Port Macquarie on UFOs and space awareness

PORT Macquarie residents will be encouraged to “look up” when astronomer Dave Reneke addresses the Probus Club on Wednesday 6 May.

Reneke, from the Mid North Coast Astronomy and Science Centre, will discuss the enduring mysteries of UFOs.

His presentation will challenge common assumptions based on science and observation.

Reneke says understanding space is more important than many people realise.

“Space underpins daily life (GPS, weather, communications),” he said.Set featured image

He notes that many sightings reported as unusual can often be explained with simple context.

“Usually aircraft, satellites, drones, or lanterns [appear] unusual due to lighting and perspective,” he said.

When asked about multiple sightings in Port Macquarie over the years, he debunked the theory that it is a hotspot for UFOs.

“No. Not a true hotspot. Most people cannot discern the real shape or size of things in the sky at night from a distance and at night all lights look round.”

The Probus session with Reneke offers a rare opportunity to separate myth from reality and better understand the skies above.

Visitors are welcome to attend for free by contacting Julie on 0413 084 733.

Probus is an organisation for active retirees built on fun, friendship and fellowship.

The Probus Club of Port Macquarie meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 10am at Port City Bowling Club in Owen Street.
