YOUNG aspiring artists were treated to a “Paint and Shake” workshop hosted by Port City Bowling Club (PCBC) as part of the fourth annual Hastings Valley Open Art Prize.
Artists Peggy Eather and Jan von Schoenberg from the Hastings Valley Fine Arts Association, together with Penny Lindsay, guided the children from a blank canvas to a hang-on-the-wall painting.
Over 20 children attended, ranging in age from five to 13, with each one given a blank canvas, paint and brushes.
Peggy Eather, who demonstrated, helped the young artists understand composition and the importance of the horizon in a landscape.
“The children were also taught about colour mixing and creating secondary colours from primary colours,” she said.
“Each one produced a piece that was an interesting and thoughtful… birds’ eye view of Lighthouse Beach and Tacking Point Lighthouse.
“It was a messy but productive workshop that left every child with a terrific painting.”
At the end of the workshop, the children were encouraged to view the paintings on exhibition at the Hastings Valley Open Art Prize and to choose their favourite piece as part of the Peoples’ Choice competition.
