FOR Bonny Hills volunteer Casey Whitehouse it was becoming a parent that truly opened her eyes to the importance of strong support networks.
While she had always believed in the importance of community, motherhood gave her a deeper understanding of how vital connection and support can be.
“Parenthood can be incredibly joyful, but it can also be isolating and overwhelming at times,” she said.
“Hearing the experiences of other parents really opened my eyes to how many families are quietly navigating maternal mental health challenges.”
That realisation inspired Casey to become more active in supporting families locally, particularly through her involvement with The Nurtured Village.
Casey established a local branch of the national charity dedicated to improving maternal mental health.
Every month, volunteers supply hampers of donated goods and services to young and deserving families.
Through this role, she has helped provide support, resources and connection for parents who may be struggling behind the scenes.
“What I love most is the connection that comes from this work,” she said.
“Hearing people’s stories, helping parents feel less alone, and seeing how powerful community support can be is incredibly rewarding.”
Casey explained that sometimes the smallest gestures can have the biggest impact.
“Sometimes it’s just a conversation, sharing a resource, or giving a care hamper,” she said.
“Those little things can remind someone they are seen and supported.”
Looking back, she says one of her proudest achievements has been helping to bring greater awareness to maternal mental health within the local community.
“I’m proud to be part of initiatives that provide practical and emotional support to families when they need it most,” she said.
“But it’s not just me, it’s the collective effort of the volunteers, businesses and families involved with The Nurtured Village.
“It really is a community effort.”
Looking ahead, she hopes the local community will continue to strengthen the conversation.
“I’d love to see our community continue to wrap around families with kindness and understanding, because when parents are supported, the effect reaches children, families and the whole community.”
