DESPITE fighting smart and sticking to the plan, it wasn’t Port Macquarie Boxing Club’s night at the Coolongatta Hotel on 7 March.
The local club sent two of their strongest amateur fighters north to the Undisputed Fight Night 2.
Attracting a lively crowd, the event combined multiple bouts across weight divisions, with Port Macquarie’s Ryan Campbell and Charlie Huckson competing in the amateur divisions.
Cornered by coach Nicky Leech, 25-year-old Ryan took to the ring in the 70kg division, against 19-year-old Harper Boyd from Undisputed Boxing & Fitness Tweed Heads.
It was a tough bout, with both boys showcasing a notable improvement.
Unfortunately, the result wasn’t in Ryan’s favour.
“It was a really smart fight,” Port Boxing coach Blake McKenzie told News Of The Area.
“Ryan was just out-pointed unfortunately. He lost out on points.”
23-year-old Charlie, cornered by Blake, faced 31-year-old Stefan Lipski, also from Undisputed Boxing & Fitness Tweed Heads.
The 65kg amateur fight saw Charlie bow out after taking a heavy hit.
“Charlie was fighting well and in charge for Round 1 and Round 2, but unfortunately, in the last five seconds of the road, Charlie suffered a knockdown and the ref stopped the fight.”
Although they didn’t get the results they were hoping for on the night, both coaches were proud of how the boys performed.
“It wasn’t our night, but both fighters fought well and weren’t hurt,” said Blake.
Both fights can be viewed on the local YouTube channel, Passion for Pugilism.
Port Macquarie Boxing Club’s next fight night is on 9 April at the King of the Ring amateur boxing tournament, Bernie Mullane Sports Complex in Kellyville, Sydney.
