Ms Richardson said she was excited to head the Society in this next phase of recovery and revitalisation, following the death in September of founder, Maureen Cooke.

“We began the AGM proceedings by tabling the wonderful tribute to Maureen’s life, which was recently presented in NSW Parliament in session by Port Macquarie MP Robert Dwyer,” Julie said.

“Our sincere thanks to Mr Dwyer for formally recognising Maureen’s long-standing community commitment.”

The Parliament heard how Maureen was a driving force in local organisations including Endeavour Clubhouse, the Port Macquarie Art Society, and the Dementia Memory and Community Centre.

“Her support for mental health initiatives, fundraising efforts, and pastoral care touched countless lives,” Mr Dwyer said.

“Even into her 90s, Maureen remained active in community service, a testament to her enduring spirit.

“Her legacy is one of kindness, creativity, and commitment.”

The Art Society has charge of two buildings on Hamilton Green, Hastings River Drive, which are on Crown Land under licence from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

They are the heritage-listed 1893 Hibbard Schoolhouse and the Manor House, a magnificent former Port Macquarie guesthouse that was moved on-site in 1984.

Julie said the process of necessary maintenance on the two buildings continues in conjunction with Council and the Heritage Advisor.

“It is a big job,” she said.

“In the new year we will start to progressively contact local art groups and individuals to explore the potential for future use of the site, towards Maureen’s goal of promoting art locally.”
