BUSINESS SHOWCASE: Black Duck Brewery

ICONIC Black Duck Brewery has undergone a refreshing facelift since new owners Mel and Tim Ludlow took over in February of this year.

Originally from Western Sydney, a chance stopover in Port Macquarie on the way to Queensland saw the Ludlow family fall in love with the region. This led to annual holidays on the Mid North Coast.

Seeking a sea change, they ultimately relocated to the area, and to their delight other family and friends have followed them.

A background in hospitality made the opportunity to buy the brewery too good to pass up.

“We started looking at what sort of place we would like to spend time in ourselves and felt the venue had so much potential.” Mr Ludlow said.

“We really like the beer and started imagining what the place could look like; our vision has been a modern-day English pub.”

The venue was closed for four months while extensive upgrades and renovations were carried out. The Ludlows have put in extraordinary efforts to ensure that they are as inclusive as possible.

This includes a new purpose-built ramp for mobility devices, and a warm welcome plus pet treat for all dogs that pop in for a visit.

The brewery is committed to supporting local suppliers wherever possible and proudly stocks wine from local wineries Cassegrain and Bago, along with spirits from Maria River Distillery, PMQ Distillery and SKNYB Vodka.

Mr Ludlow aims to foster the live music industry with a new stage installed specifically for live music performances. Upcoming acts include an EP launch by well-known local singer Jake Davey and performances by Billy Stiles and Rob Young.

The beautiful beer garden seats 50 with relaxing views out across native bushland, and the location is proving popular for Christmas party and milestone-birthday bookings.

Black Duck is well-known for serving up delicious food, with their pizza menu a firm favourite. Rather than having a separate children’s menu, main meals can be ordered in smaller portions.

Mr Ludlow is excited to showcase the enhancements to locals.

“I’m thankful every day to be here,” Mr Ludlow said.

“Our vision is to be a nice and cosy spot, and we take great pride in our friendly atmosphere and commitment to the region.”
