HASTINGS Education Fund (HEF) has been supporting local students since 2011, providing financial assistance to help them achieve their post-high school education, training and vocational aspirations.
Johnathon Cains is among those benefiting from the local organisation, and he encourages local students to apply for a grant.
Mr Cains attended MacKillop College from 2018 to 2023 and began studying a Bachelor of Nursing in 2024 at Monash University’s Clayton Campus in Melbourne. He’s due to graduate in December.
“HEF has been fundamental in helping me complete my tertiary studies,” he said.
“I still remember the first time HEF committee chair, Julie McLeod told me: ‘It’s your turn to fly’ at a time when enrolling at my dream university seemed impossible.
“HEF’s support has truly allowed me to put my all into my dream of becoming a nurse.”
Coming from a low-income background and being a young carer, HEF gave him the support that allowed him to focus on study and compulsory clinical placements.
“HEF has significantly helped me to achieve my potential by making tertiary education more accessible for me,” he said.
“I will forever be grateful for every supporter, especially Monica Atkinson, who generously chose to support me until I graduate.
“I almost didn’t apply for an HEF grant, but if you have a dream, apply.
“It doesn’t mean just money: you get supporters in your corner who want you to become your best self.”
Since 2011, HEF has backed 353 students, providing $1,077,150 in financial support.
To be eligible for a grant, applicants must be aged 16-25, live or attend school in the Hastings area, demonstrate a need, and show commitment to achieving their goals.
