BLOKES Notes Acapella choir is known for its energetic and quirky performances around Port Macquarie.
Less well-known is its long-term support for the women’s refuge run by Liberty Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services.
Representatives Brooke Pilbeam and Marcelle Brown recently attended a special rehearsal to receive a cheque for $2000, raised from performance donations.
Blokes Notes president John Horsley said his members were proud of their 17-year commitment to Liberty Services.
The evening had been planned to strengthen the partner relationship and to inform Blokes Notes’s members of Liberty Services’ work in the community.
Ms Pilbeam expressed her gratitude to the men’s choir for standing with Liberty and the women and children it supports.
“Having a local group of men use their voices, their music and their community connections to support this work is incredibly meaningful,” she said.
“Their ongoing commitment demonstrates that creating safer communities is something in which we can all have a role.”
Mr Horsley recalled the visit to Port Macquarie by the Spooky Men’s Chorale that inspired Marcus Ludricks, Warren Frumar and others to form a men’s choir in 2009 and sing a similar, often quirky repertoire of songs.
“It’s wonderful that a male choir can use the joy and power of music to make a difference in our community by supporting the women’s refuge,” musical director Leanne Johnson said.
“This partnership with Liberty Services defines a greater purpose each time the Blokes Notes perform.”
