Flamin’ Dragons Regatta at Rocks Ferry Reserve

400 dragon boat competitors from 16 clubs across NSW converged on Rocks Ferry Reserve over the weekend for the Flamin’ Dragons annual regatta.

With two regattas scheduled in 2025 cancelled due to flooding, the crowds were overjoyed to have sunny weather.

Saturday featured two-kilometre turn races that required four 500-metre laps. This was followed by the Fast Plast Dash for Cash 100-metre race. This was over in 40 seconds and the winners rowed away with $350.

Sunday was dominated by 37 heats of 200 metres, alongside a novelty race for paddlers aged over 70 years competing against paddlers with less than 12 months experience.

“Manning River Club got into every final, it was fantastic to see a local club doing so well,” said Flamin’ Dragons member Jenny Higgins.

”We have been overwhelmed with the positive feedback we have received; it was a fantastic event, and we were delighted to see lots of spectators watching the races.”

The event received significant sponsorship from Port Macquarie Hastings Council with Councillor Nik Lipovac officiating at the event and telling News Of The Area that the Flamin’ Dragons committee hosted a very successful event that was enjoyed by all  competitors.

“It takes months of preparation and the two days of action on the Hastings River went off without a hitch,” said Cr Lipovac.

“The feedback from the teams was extremely positive, this was a tremendous event for our region.”

Additional sponsorship was supplied by Eire Constructions, Seasalt Café & Restaurant, Mount Seaview Natural Spring Water, JR Richards & Sons, Woolworths, and Kennards Hire.

Marine Rescue Port Macquarie supplied two jet skis and a rescue boat; their volunteers carried out first aid and provided a food van which served up hot meals throughout the weekend.
