Seniors Week a chance to get out and about around the Hastings

SENIORS across the Hastings Valley have been out and about celebrating Seniors Week, 2-15 March.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council hosted “Live your life in colour,” which provided a space to connect and celebrate lived experiences.

Intergenerational creative workshops were held at Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Laurieton libraries.

Young people aged 10+ and the young at heart, aged 50+, were invited to participate in relaxed, hands-on collage workshops led by Casey Baldwin from Intergen Connect.

Participants shared memories, music, places, and life stories.

Port Macquarie Library then exhibited their work.

Karen Karta and teenager Kelli Williams spoke of the benefits of the workshops.

“It was inspiring to sit down with young people and watch their progress as they engaged more and more each week with us,” Karen said.

The Seed Art School also facilitated guided outdoor painting sessions in Lake Cathie and Wauchope.

Information sessions for older drivers were held in Port Macquarie and Wauchope libraries, mindful yoga sessions were conducted on Town Beach, and photography workshops were held at Sunset Gallery.

The Cairncross Waste Facility conducted a behind-the-scenes tour, which gave practical tips for reducing waste and using household bins correctly.

Silver Sound Bites on Friday evening, 6 March, saw a celebration of live jazz and soul music as well as street performers at the wharf stage on Clarence Street.

Douglas Vale held a community day on Wednesday 4 March with entertainment from local duo “As the Flow Cries” and the Wauchope RSL Pipes and Drums.

Art workshops were also held at the Port Macquarie Museum, led by Vivianne Hazenveld.

Participants created collages inspired by three local women, Annabella Boswell, Major Innes’ niece; Ellen Butler, whose family owned Coolenberg House; and Wendy Machin, a former politician.

The artworks will be exhibited on Saturday 14 March, from 2pm -3.30pm.

One of the final events was due to be The Big Sing on Thursday 12 March, featuring local choirs on The Glasshouse steps.
