SUPPORT for the LGBTQIA+ community will take centre stage in Port Macquarie this month, with film, storytelling and live performance combining for a night of connection and creativity.

Charles Sturt University returns as a regional partner for the Queer Screen Australia Film Festival, which is a curated showcase of short films from the Mardi Gras Film Festival.

The 18-plus event will be held at the Player’s Theatre on Friday 27 March, from 6pm.

Festival organisers have selected eight short films spanning drama, comedy, and romance, promising a mix of uplifting moments and powerful narratives reflecting diverse lived experiences.

Out Loud & Proud spokesperson Rackas Robinson said the event reflects meaningful regional progress.

“It’s been inspiring to see how much the Mid North Coast has grown in recent years,” she said.

“When Out Loud & Proud began, the goal was simple, making sure LGBTQIA+ people in regional communities felt supported and not alone.

“Taking the Mid North Coast Pride Float to Mardi Gras twice was a proud moment, representing regional communities nationally.

“But most of this work is volunteer-led, and without ongoing community support it’s easy for people to burn out.”

The momentum is visible across the region.

Rainbow Coffs Harbour now hosts an annual Pride Walk, while grassroots groups including Forster Rainbow Pride and the Dunbogan Picnic group continue creating welcoming spaces for connection.

Events such as “It’s OK on the Macleay” bring communities together in family friendly celebrations of diversity, while local arts organisation Snappy Productions has increased visibility by bringing Queer theatre to Port Macquarie.

Social group Cheers Queers has added vibrant energy to the local scene, and the recently formed Trans Collective is expanding support for trans and gender diverse people across the Mid North Coast.

Recent celebrations, including Lifesavers With Pride, have also highlighted the strength and diversity of the region’s LGBTQIA+ community.
